Nigel Mayfield makes the jump to Division I athletics, being hired as an assistant coach by NSU in July 2025.
Mayfield comes to Natchitoches following two seasons at Wiley University in the NAIA, where he helped lead the Lady Wildcats to an HBCUAC Tournament runner-up in 2025.
He worked with player development and was instrumental in the development of Jessica Nerestant, who nearly averaged a double with 11.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and was selected to the conference’s all-defensive team.
Mayfield recruited, presented scouting reports and served as the video coordinator.
Prior to Wiley, he worked at Kilgore College as an assistant coach for a season, doing post player development, where he worked with talented forwards Nakiyah Allen and Nyla Inmon.
Mayfield also assisted in recruiting around Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
He began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Texas College, as a volunteer assistant coach doing player development for the men’s basketball team for a season.
Immediately following graduation Mayfield served as a varsity assistant at Tyler High School and head girls coach at Boulter Middle School. He also gained player development experience working with NBA Trainer Irv Roland, Texas U Premier AAU and Scoutz App.
Mayfield graduated from Texas College in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies.
