WACO, Texas – The Northwestern State track & field team continues to push toward the Southland Conference Championships with strong performances at the Baylor Invitational on Saturday.
Coming off a week break, the jumps team was eager to get back into competition, and it showed as they put up top marks in competition.
Leading the way for the Lady Demons was
Fabriana Nation and
Jasmyn Steels in the triple jump.
Nation, the junior from Belle Glade, Florida, placed first overall with her mark of 39-03.75, while Steels, a freshman, finished fourth with a leap of 38-10.25.
Quanese Jones-Young also impressed in the high jump, taking fourth in the meet with her mark of 5-03.75.
For the Demons, there was a bevy of jumpers in the top five, highlighted by a pair of second-place finishes from
Tre' Evans in the high jump (6-08.75) and
Ceaser Stephens in the triple (50-08.25).
Other members of the Demon jump squad making their mark were
Deylon Key and
Jacorious Jeter in the long jump with distances of 24-01.00 and 23-11.50.
Rounding out the top five for NSU was
Quindarrius Thompson in the triple with his fifth place finish (48-10.00).
The field event success did not end there, as the men's shot put combination of
Cedric Paul (56-04.00) and
Kyrin Tucker (56-03.75) went one-two in the event.
Multiple Demon and Lady Demon sprinters also performed well, replacing multiple top-five marks in the NSU history books at Clyde Hart stadium.
Junior
Amir James returned to All-American form after an uncharacteristic false start at the Texas Relays.
The Missouri City, Texas, product posted his best 100m time of the season, 10.20, to finish third overall, where he was joined by fellow All-American
Micah Larkins who glided to fifth with his time of 10.23.
But James was not done there, as he continued his dominance in the 200m by posting the third-best fastest mark in NSU history, 20.63, to win gold in Waco.
The dynamic duo of James and Larkins make up half of the 4x100 relay, which combined with
George Flaviano and
Terrance Johnson, finished fourth overall in 40.04.
For the Lady Demons,
Daeshon Gordon continued to find her form in the hurdles.
The LSU transfer tied her own record of 13.38 in the 100H to remain the second-fastest hurdler in NSU history with her silver medal finish.
Also continuing her strong spring with a Lady Demon top-five performance was
De'Shalyn Jones.
The junior sprinter ran the 100M for the third time in her career, resulting in an 11.50 and a third place finish. The time is also the fourth-fastest time in NSU history.
Jones also finished her hallmark event, the 200M in 23.20, which means she owns the top-two results in Lady Demon history after her silver medal finish.
