RUSTON – Northwestern State competitors were blazing and soaring despite competing into a chilly Wednesday night at the Jim Mize Invitational track and field meet.

In a triangular competition with host Louisiana Tech and UL Monroe, NSU won 10 events and tuned up for Saturday's TCU Invitational, meeting the expectations of head coach Mike Heimerman.

"It was a glorified workout and everybody did well. We went in fairly healthy and came out just fine, and we got good work in," said Heimerman. "Hopefully we'll be sharp on Saturday at TCU."

Along with the 10 first places, NSU competitors added six second place performances and seven took third.

NSU's relay teams excelled again, sweeping the 4x100 relays with the Lady Demons blowing away the competition in the 4x400.

"Our 4x1s did well, running by themselves in cool weather. The 4x4 women won by 110 meters," said Heimerman.

The Demons blew around the oval in 40.80, nearly two seconds ahead of ULM. The Lady Demons clocked in the 4x100 and ran 3: in the 4x400.

Quanese Jones-Young won the women's high jump with a personal record 5-8.  "She skied over it," said Heimerman.

Other wins by the Lady Demons: Kristina Vujanic in the 400 (58.84), Tyra Duma in the triple jump (37-6 1/2) and Cori Runnels in the shot put (45-0).

Two more firsts from the Demons came when Travis Allen took the 200 (23.45), and Cedric Paul won the shot put (54-9 3/4).
