NATCHITOCHES – Coaching collegiate sports requires the ability to multitask. In the midst of a tight battle for seeding in the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament, third-year head coach
Sean Kiracofe and his staff added two players to the 2018 roster.
The pair composing the fall class – setter Skylar Besch and middle blocker Reagan Lee – officially signed their National Letters of Intent with NSU, Kiracofe announced Wednesday.
Besch, standing 5-foot-9, lettered four times for Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, impressing Kiracofe with her transition from attacking to setting early in her career. Besch also played club volleyball for seven years, three with Austin Juniors Volleyball and four with Austin Performance Volleyball.
She helped lead her high school team to four state playoff appearances, including a third-round appearance in her junior season. Besch earned all-district honors as a sophomore and junior, team offensive MVP as a junior and district setter of the year in her senior year. In her last three seasons, Besch recorded 2,629 assists.
"Skylar is a very versatile setter that is going to be able to add a lot to our program," Kiracofe said. "She's a lefty that started out as an attacker and transitioned into setting. That allows her to be an offensive threat at the net, but what is more important is that she is smart about when she uses that ability as an option.
"She is a setter first and an offensive option second, which can be a hard adjustment for a lot of players that make a change like that. Skylar is playing chess out there figuring out the best way to attack defenses, which we are really excited about. She plays high school just down the road from where I grew up so there must be something in the water over there."
Lee lettered three years for Ruston High School, earning team offensive MVP and all-district honors in her sophomore season. As a junior, she earned district MVP honors en route to being named Shreveport Times Regional Player of the Year. Lee also played club volleyball for a year at Rocketfuel. With the addition of Lee, the Lady Demons roster will feature two players from Louisiana, joining freshman Hannah Brister.
"Reagan doesn't drink Austin, Texas, water, but she's doing something right," Kiracofe said. "We're happy to be adding another player from Louisiana to the roster with Reagan coming just from up the road in Ruston. With the growth of the sport in Central and Northern Louisiana we knew that we were going to start finding great recruits at some point soon, and we were lucky that has happened sooner rather later.
"Reagan is a very long and athletic player that moves really well. She will be able to come in and physically compete at our level from day one and has so much potential she can reach. We expect great things from Reagan and she will represent Louisiana volleyball well just like Hannah Brister has been doing in her freshman season."
