NATCHITOCHES – Los Angeles Rams rookie offensive lineman Pace Murphy, 2011 NCAA women's discus champion Trecey Rew Hoover, 2015 Southland Conference baseball Hitter of the Year Cort Brinson and All-America sprinter Gabriel White were among 44 Northwestern State athletes and staff members receiving degrees Friday at the university's fall commencement ceremonies.
 
De'Mard Llorens, who became NSU football's 10th all-time leading rusher, and Tuff McClain, who moved into 10th on the Demons' career receptions list, also received degrees Friday.
 
Six student-athletes earned their undergraduate degrees with high honors. Graduating magna cum laude with grade point averages between 3.70 and 3.89 were former Lady Demon softball player Shelby Alexander, former Lady Demon tennis competitor Ilijana Ivic and former Demon baseball player Reid Van Bussum. Earning cum laude recognition for a GPA between 3.50-3.69 were two former softball student-athletes, Shelby Sells and Skylar Cagle, and former volleyballer Amanda Kunz.
 
Brinson, also the 2015 Southland Conference Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year, was joined on the grad list by former teammate Daniel Garner, a catcher who was chosen in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
 
Hoover earned her master's degree in sport administration. She was an Academic All-America competitor who claimed her bachelor's degree with magna cum laude honors and since competed in two USA Olympic Trials.
 
As a freshman, White was part of NSU's 2013 All-America 4x100 meter relay team.
 
Three-time All-Southland Conference first baseman Brittney Jones, who will threaten Lady Demon softball school records as a senior next spring, was joined on the graduation list by 2016 All-Southland outfielder Natalie Landry, Both were standouts on NCAA Tournament teams in 2014 and 2015. Also on those teams were Alexander, Sells, Cagle and fall 2016 graduate Sarah Huey.
 
Kunz was a member of the Lady Demon volleyball team that reached the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
 
Along with Llorens, a first-team all-conference pick this season, two more All-Southland football players received diplomas:  2016 second-team selection Cameron Hussey, and 2014 second-team selection Adam Jones. They were among 18 Demon footballers graduating Friday.
