VICTORIA, B.C. – James Hulbin erupted for 30 points and Jalan West added 20 Wednesday night, with 12 from West coming to open the decisive fourth quarter of an 82-77 exhibition basketball win for a touring Northwestern State squad over Victoria Select.

West, a redshirt freshman guard, scored the first 12 points for the Demons in the final quarter, which started with a two-point NSU advantage.  Hulbin, a 6-8 senior forward, missed only four of his 14 shots and sank 8-of-9 free throws in the biggest scoring output of his career.

The contest was the toughest test of the week so far for the Demons, who opened their visit to British Columbia on Sunday night with a 105-40 rout of Quest University before defeating Vancouver Island University's Mariners 89-71 Tuesday night, pulling away from a six-point halftime advantage.

James Hulbin and Jalan West carried us offensively tonight,” said 14th-year Demons' coach Mike McConathy.  “They created their own shots well against excellent defense.  The Victoria Select team was a talented, disciplined, well-coached team on both ends of the floor.  We will have to get another solid performance to be successful against them (Thursday) night.”

The Demons led 17-16 after one 10-minute quarter, and 39-36 at halftime before the home team closed within 61-59 heading into the final period in a game played under international rules.

Northwestern and Victoria Select staged a rematch late Thursday before the Demons were departing Vancouver early Friday morning to return home.

In Wednesday's contest, senior guard Shamir Davis continued his consistent production with 16 points, sinking 10 of 16 free throws. Other than Hulbin, NSU struggled shooting from the floor, going just 15 of 54 outside of Hulbin's 10-for-14 showing.

Also Wednesday, the NSU junior varsity squad posted a 79-68 victory over Comosun as sophomore center Marvin Frazier and Hornbeck freshman forward Matt Killian each scored 17 for the Demons. Gary Roberson and Gary Stewart added 11 points each, while Austin Adams scored nine, twin brother Dustin Adams added eight, and senior David Ulak pitched in with four.
