NSU's 2012 Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State was second, just two away from sharing top honors among the league's 12 member institutions, by having 85 student-athletes in baseball, softball, track and field, women's tennis, and basketball recognized on the 2012 Southland Conference Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Northwestern State had 21 competitors from baseball, 18 on the women's track and field squad, 13 from softball, a dozen from men's track and field, eight each from women's basketball and women's tennis, and five from men's basketball who qualified for the spring honor roll by posting at least a 3.0 grade point average during the spring semester.
 
Among Northwestern's honorees are 16 student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average for the semester, the highest total in the conference along with 16 from Lamar.
 
Posting perfect GPA's in the spring semester were women's tennis standout Andrea Nedorostova (communications), women's basketball competitors Meredith Graf (health and physical education), Ebony Ford (psychology and addiction studies) and Tashana Triplett (business administration); baseball players Jamie Bittle (math and English), Carson Goldsmith (biology) and Zach Winchester (psychology), softball competitors Sara Aasness (communications) Blair Beard (business and accounting), and Bailee Cartwright (communications); women's track and field competitors Ashley Aldredge (health and exercise science), Aly Coughlin (health and exercise science) and Becca Meehan (biology); men's track and field athletes Alex Hebert (business and accounting) and Chris Lanier (biology); and men's basketball player Paxson Guest (Louisiana Scholars' College).
 
Men's basketball player Gary Stewart posted a 3.82 GPA in psychology. Stewart, a member of the all-academic team for basketball, also was the recipient of the Steve McCarty Citizenship Award. Kelee Grimes is one of 13 softball players to make the honor roll. Grimes, who had a 3.25 in business administration, was named Northwestern State's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned her third appearance on the softball all-academic team.
 
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll recognizes student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
 
A record total of 987 student-athletes named to the spring honor roll surpassed the record of 953 set last spring. This year's list boasts 142 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester. The honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
