NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State women's tennis team opened up the Lady Demon Invite in great fashion as all of the NSU players advanced on to the championship bracket after day one of play on Friday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
"I thought all of our girls did a great job of executing today in all we have worked on," said NSU head coach Patric Dubois. "We played good solid percentage tennis with good shot selection"
Tatiana Larina defeated Grambling's Georgia Stephenson 6-1, 6-2 in flight one of singles play.
Junior
Polina Konop also played in the first flight, taking down Lamar's Ellen Czudek 6-1, 6-2.
In the second flight,
Andrea Nedorostova beat Kate Bugayenko of Stephen F. Austin 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman
Daniela Simonova and sophomore
Olga Leyshyna were both dealt a BYE for their first matches and will automatically advance on to the championship bracket.
In doubles play, Konop and Simonova defeated Lamar's Maso and Mayagoitia 8-6 in the first round. The duo then went on to beat Postnikova and Dubyanskaya of Sam Houston 8-6.
The NSU team of Larina and Nedorstova received a BYE for the first round before taking down ULM's Tumova and Blankvoort 8-5 in the second round.
Both NSU doubles teams will play on Sunday in the semifinals of the first flight.
"Our doubles teams did a great job of communicating and working with each other to put us in strong offensive positions," said Dubois.
The Lady Demon Invite will continue on Saturday morning. The first matches of the day are slated to begin at 8:30.
