HUNTSVILLE, Texas - It was the same song different night for Northwestern State on Wednesday at Sam Houston State as the Lady Demons suffered the consequences of turning the ball over 23 times with the Ladykats scoring 31 points off of the errors which led to an 82-66 Sam Houston Southland Conference women's basketball win.
The loss was the fourth straight suffered by NSU as it fells to 13-15 overall and 6-9 in conference play. It was also the seventh loss in the last nine games surrendered by the Lady Demons. NSU went 0-6 against SLC West Division teams in the regular season.
Sam Houston State improved to 10-17 and 7-8 in league play. The loss guarantees NSU can finish no higher than seventh in the overall standings as it closes out the regular season on Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana in Prather Coliseum.
Senior guard Lyndzee Greene recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 13 rebounds while Brooke Shepherd led the Lady Demons with 15 points. Brittiany Houston added 13 points and Sherrion Thomas 11 as NSU shot just 36 percent from the floor (23 for 64) and hit s season low 44 percent (11 for 25) from the free throw line.
SHSU's Brittany Brooks led all scorers with 22 points as the Ladykats connected on 46 percent from the field (35 for 77) and 7 of 10 from the free throw line.
Sam Houston scored the game's first eight points before a layup by Trudy Armstead put the Lady Demons on the board with 17:13 to go in the first half.
The Ladykats led 22-8 after a layup by Ray Alexander with 12:03 to play in the half but the Lady Demons, behind a 3-pointer from Jessica McPhail and back-to-back treys by Brooke Shepherd, helped NSU put together a 19-5 run over the a course of seven minutes as the Lady Demons pulled to within 30-27 with 4:43 to play.
SHSU ended the half on an 11-3 run to go into the break with a 41-30 halftime lead.
NSU came out and scored the first six points of the second half to cut the deficit to 41-36 with 17:37 to play but SHSU quickly responded to get the lead back into double-digits and led 47-36 with 16:12 to play.
After a 3-pointer by Shepherd cut the lead to 56-49 with 12:44 to play, Sam Houston went on an 8-2 run to take a 65-51 lead at the 9:39 mark.
Another trey by Shepherd followed by a layup by McPhail cut the lead back into single-digits at 65-56 with 8:53 to play but the Ladykats scored eight points under a minute to quickly go up 73-56 with 6:56 to play.
The Ladykat lead reached its peak at 77-56 with 6:04 to play before the Lady Demons cut back the margin to its final spread of 16 points.
