MONROE The thrill of a 5-run 10th inning that led to Northwestern State’s 8-5 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Friday became a dud on Saturday after the Demons fell 12-5 to Mississippi Valley State on the second day of the Warhawk Baseball Classic.

The Demons (1-1) fell behind early and couldn’t rebound as they managed just eight hits with four of those coming in the sixth though eighth innings.

Dan Meyer was the only player to garner multiple hits, going 2 for 5 in the game.

Starting pitcher Ben Rodriguez took the loss after lasting just 2.2 innings while giving up five runs, all earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts.

The Delta Devils led 7-0 before the Demons got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI grounder from Justin O’Neal.

Mississippi Valley (2-0) responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 11-1.  The Demons scored another run in the bottom of the inning when Chase Lyles hit a lead-off triple then scored on a sacrifice fly from Eric DeBlanc.

MVSU added another run in the eighth and the Demons came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning off a solo home run from Tyler Baisley and an RBI single by Trent Grondin.

The Demons conclude play in the classic at 4 on Sunday when they take on Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin.
