HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Northwestern State was a victim of its own miscues Sunday afternoon, giving up four unearned runs on four errors as the Demons dropped the final game of a Southland Conference series to Sam Houston State, 7-5, and suffering their second league sweep of the season.
The loss was the fourth straight for NSU (24-23, 14-9 SLC) as SHSU improves to 30-19 overall and 15-9 in league play.
The Demons, who outhit the Bearkats for the second straight game, this time 12-11 on Sunday, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Matthew McGlathery singled then scored on a groundout by Jordan Nipp.
Dylan Libadisos, who finished 2 for 4 with two RBI, hit the first of his two doubles in the fourth inning, scoring Justin O’Neal and Beau Snodgrass to put NSU up 3-0.
The Bearkats tied the game in the bottom of the inning with two of those runs unearned after an error from McGlathery helped set up two of the runs.
In the fifth, Nipp and Mike Jaworski, who went 3 for 4 with a run scored, hit back-to-back one out singles, then scored on a double from Libadisos, his second of the game, to put the Demons up 5-3.
The Bearkats cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the sixth, then took advantage of two Demon errors in the sixth and seventh innings to go up 7-5.
Kyle Broughton (3-5) took the loss in a relief role after giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Demon starter Clayton Cooper threw 3.1 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, and four hits.
Zac Baker (2-1), the fourth of four SHSU pitchers, got the win after throwing the final three innings of scoreless ball and allowing two hits.
