ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas-Arlington completed a three-game Southland Conference baseball sweep over Northwestern State Sunday afternoon after the Mavs posted a 16-0, seven-inning win.
Ironically, it’s the worst loss by the Demons since an 18-3 loss to the Mavs last April.
The loss was the fifth straight suffered by the Demons as they fell to 10-9 on the season and evened their conference record at 4-4. UTA improved to 12-10 on the season and 5-4 in league play after winning its sixth consecutive game.
The Demons belted 11 hits in the game, but much like in Saturday’s 4-2 loss, couldn’t get the timely hits when needed. NSU stranded 10 runners on Sunday with five of those in scoring position.
UTA cranked 17 hits with six players getting two or more.
NSU starting pitcher Kyle Broughton took the loss after he lasted just 1-1/3 innings and gave up six runs on six hits with two strikeouts. He faced just 11 batters in the game before being lifted.
The Demon bullpen, which has been pretty solid this season, gave up 10 runs on 11 hits in 4-2/3 innings of work.
Offensivley, NSU shortstop Trent Grondin extended his hitting streak to 12 games after going 2 for 4. Third baseman Dan Meyer added a 3 for 3 game and catcher Beau Snodgrass and left fielder Colin Bear each went 2 for 3.
UTA scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning then opened the game up with nine runs on six hits in the second.
The Mavs added two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings then held off a Demon rally in the top of the seventh to end the game by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Demons return to action on Tuesday when they return home to host Centenary at 6:30 at Brown-Stroud Field.
